A Gift to Obama Supporters: Andrew J. Billups

The upcoming presidential election promises to be very close, and Virginia seems to be one of the most important states in play. Schedules permitting, I am offering a gift to anyone, who is an Obama supporter, and I expect absolutely nothing in return.

As a psychologist, I value development toward self-reliance, with help to those who experience misfortune and require assistance toward getting back on their feet. I believe that this help should be carefully crafted so that it does not embarrass its recipients, stymie their development, or contribute to a pattern of passive dependency. For this reason, I have favored the more conservative candidates for public office, and I believe that President Obama’s policies are corrosive to the human spirit.

I am willing to give any Obama supporter five minutes of my time and my undivided attention, during which I will listen without interrupting, so that they might give me their best-reasoned and most well-crafted argument for their pro-Obama vote. We can do this in-person, on the phone, or via Skype. At the end of the five minutes, I will thank them and not ask for five minutes (or anything else) in return.

Any takers can call or e-mail me to arrange a time. Who knows? Maybe you will convince me to change my vote. You may wish to be open to that possibility!
